Virginia State Senator David Marsden is spearheading efforts to pass legislation facilitating a referendum on the establishment of a casino in Fairfax. Although a similar proposal in 2022 yielded no results, both authorities and developers are now taking the project in Tysons-Corner, a suburb of Fairfax, more seriously. The envisioned complex includes not just a casino but also a concert hall, a conference center, and a hotel.
Marsden asserts that hosting casinos and entertainment facilities in the area will bring substantial benefits to Dulles Airport. Despite the governor's opposition to gambling, Marsden argues for practicality, stating, "I don't like lotteries. I don't like any of this. But we have to be practical, not naive." He believes Virginia should consider the potential for economic growth through the gambling industry.
Analysts highlight Fairfax's longstanding role as the economic hub of the state. However, City Manager Walter Alcorn stands in opposition to the casino construction, expressing disapproval of a referendum, citing concerns that the associated costs could rival those of building the actual gambling establishment.
