Australia denies blanket ban on online gambling ads
The Australian government has refuted claims that it plans to implement a ban on online gambling advertising and a partial ban on television advertising within the next two years. Reports from various media outlets suggested that the government aims to address the gambling issue in a drastic manner by "limiting the extensive marketing and advertising, including on social media."
During a press conference, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese clarified that no decisions have been made yet and that the matter is still under discussion. He acknowledged the gambling problem and emphasised the government's commitment to a constructive resolution. Over the past two years, the government has established a register of problem gamblers, prohibited the use of credit cards for betting, and is now considering revisions to advertising and marketing regulations.
Regarding gambling and betting advertisements on television—a contentious topic—it appears likely that a partial ban could be implemented by 2026. This timeline would allow broadcasters and gambling operators to adjust to existing contractual obligations. The anticipated restrictions may primarily impact commercial slots scheduled before, during, and after sports events. Nevertheless, discussions regarding amendments to the advertising rules continue.
