Dirk Arthur, Las Vegas' last animal trainer, has died.
He was 63 years old.
Westgate Las Vegas officials have confirmed the death of Dirk Arthur, a former entertainer who recently worked for them. Without revealing details, they only confirmed the information to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. He was recently planning a new show in Branson, Missouri.
His show, "The Wild Magic of Dirk Arthur," was first presented in 1997 at Bally's Hotel and then traveled to various locations including Silverton, Plaza, Tropicana, O'Sheas, Harrah's in Reno and Laughlin, and the Riviera until it closed in 2015.
This show was the last official exotic cat show held on the Las Vegas Strip.
For the last five months of 2017 and 2018, Dirk Arthur's Wild Magic was presented at Westgate. Prior to the show, the idea of showing snow leopards, bobcats, birds, and ducks had to be abandoned.
Arthur had plans to bring the big cats back to the Las Vegas stage by July 2022. He kept about 10 of them at his private one-acre zoo near Silverton. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) called after his death for the remaining exotic cats to be transferred to accredited shelters where they could live in more comfortable conditions and not be forced to perform.
