Former MGM Executive Scott Sibella Admits to Illegal Gambling, MGM Fined $7.5M

Scott Sibella, ex-president of MGM Grand Las Vegas and Resorts World Las Vegas, has pleaded guilty to charges related to illegal gambling activities. His involvement with an unlawful sports-betting operation led by Wayne Nix could result in a five-year prison sentence and a $250,000 fine.

During his tenure at MGM Grand (2010-19), Sibella enabled Nix, a former minor league baseball player, to gamble at the casino, breaching anti-money laundering laws. Nix's gambling ring of pro athletes and clients from the NFL and MLB was active for nearly two decades.

Sibella's plea agreement reveals he provided Nix with perks like hotel stays and golf trips, aiding client recruitment for Nix's illegal venture. Nix himself faces a possible eight-year sentence after admitting to running an illegal gambling operation and tax fraud.

MGM Resorts, the parent company, has agreed to pay $7.5 million in fines for its involvement. This comes as the gambling industry faces increasing fines, with 2024's total already exceeding $15 million.
