Irish Justice Minister Faces Opposition Over Gambling Bill Fundraising Concerns

Irish Justice Minister James Browne found himself in a heated debate with opposition MPs regarding the potential impact of the gambling bill on fundraising efforts for its implementation. The discussion unfolded amidst concerns raised by MPs regarding the potential intertwining of charities and commercial gambling within the proposed legislation.

The Gambling Regulation Bill, which seeks to establish a regulated gambling market in Ireland, has been under scrutiny in the country's Lower House since July 2023.

During the parliamentary session, Labor MP Aidan O'Riordain proposed an amendment aimed at excluding charities from the bill. Minister Browne urged Riordain to withdraw the amendment, arguing that its implementation would strip away essential safeguards and protections for the sector. Browne also criticized other lawmakers for their tardiness, suggesting that their absence resulted in missed opportunities for discussing the proposed amendment.

In response to Browne's stance, Sinn Féin MP Piers Doherty voiced strong opposition, expressing concerns that the provisions outlined in Browne's Act could potentially harm numerous groups and charities, effectively "crucifying" them in the process.
