Major League Soccer (MLS) matches in 2023 witnessed an unprecedented surge in betting, following the transfer of football legend Lionel Messi to Inter Miami, where he plays as a forward.
Betting firm Kambi reported a 33% increase in the number of bets compared to the same period in 2022, with Messi’s mid-season transfer being a key factor. In Latin America, particularly in Messi’s home country of Argentina, the volume of bets increased by 135%.
Compared to other professionals, Messi also "won": bets on him were 140% higher than on Los Angeles striker Denis Buanga, who was the second most popular in football betting.
