The National Basketball Association (NBA) has issued a lifetime ban to Jontay Porter, center for the Toronto Raptors, following an investigation into betting-related misconduct. The probe revealed that Porter breached league regulations by divulging confidential information to other sports bettors and placing bets on NBA games himself.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver emphasized the paramount importance of safeguarding the integrity of the league's competition. He stated, "Nothing is more important than protecting the integrity of the NBA's competition for our fans, our teams, and everyone associated with our sport, which is why Jontay Porter's violation of our betting rules carries the harshest possible penalty."
The investigation unveiled that Porter disclosed confidential health information to an NBA bettor ahead of Toronto's game against the Sacramento Kings on March 20. Subsequently, the recipient of this information placed an express bet totaling $80,000 with an online bookmaker and netted $1.1 million in winnings. However, the bet was flagged due to irregular activity, resulting in its freezing and non-payment.
