Activist Urges Nigerian President to Prohibit Sports Betting for National Welfare
Reno Omokri, a socio-political activist, has urged Nigerian President Bola Tinubu to impose a ban on all forms of sports betting in the country. Omokri believes that restricting betting activities would enhance the well-being of Nigerians and contribute to the strengthening of the national currency, the naira. Taking to social media, Omokri called for the revocation of licenses for sports betting operators and the blocking of bookmaker apps, citing a pervasive "gambling epidemic" that he claims is negatively impacting the youth. Data from the National Lottery Fund indicates daily gambling spending in Nigeria amounts to $1 billion, with an average daily expenditure of $15 per individual on sports betting or gambling, as emphasized by the activist.
