New defendants emerge in UK election betting scandal

A fresh controversy regarding wagers on the election date has emerged in the UK, with Welsh MP Russell George now being scrutinised.

The fifth Conservative politician was questioned by the Gambling Commission, which oversees the licensing, regulation, and guidance for individuals and businesses offering gambling services in the UK.

Sir Philip Davis also became embroiled in a huge election betting scandal after he allegedly bet £8,000 ($10,000) that he would lose his seat. “What do you care if I did it or not,” Davis said in response to his opponents’ accusations.

The Gambling Commission is currently investigating at least five cases in which Conservatives allegedly bet on the timing of the July 4 general election.
