Potential Changes to Betting Rules in Iowa

In Iowa, there are discussions underway regarding potential changes to the rules governing bookmakers in the state. Currently, Iowa stands out among the nearly 40 states that have legalized betting by requiring bookmakers to maintain lists of individuals prohibited from participating in sports betting. These lists typically include athletes, coaches, and other individuals closely associated with sports.

However, lawmakers are now considering eliminating this requirement, citing redundancy. They argue that professional and collegiate sports leagues already have similar guidelines in place. Representative Megan Jones emphasized the challenges bookmakers face in keeping such registries updated, especially considering the frequent changes in positions for sports officials, coaches, and athletes.

Jones highlighted that if bookmakers struggle to meet this requirement, they may need to outsource the task to external organizations, adding an additional burden. Maintaining an accurate and comprehensive list of all individuals associated with sports would pose significant challenges and could be deemed practically unfeasible.
