50 Arrested in Qatar for Running Illegal Casino

Qatar’s Department of Criminal Investigation under the Ministry of Interior arrested 50 Asian nationals for operating an illegal casino in a residential building. During the search, numerous mobile devices (tablets and smartphones) with installed arcade games requiring deposits, bags of cash, and alcohol of dubious quality were found. The authorities believe the money was earned through the distribution of online slot machines and winnings in the virtual gambling house.

Gambling is prohibited in Qatar under Sharia law, which is a set of rules for Muslims. Such activities are equated with fraud and alcohol consumption, which are also banned in the country. Locals are not allowed to play in casinos or bet on sports. However, an underground industry thrives in Qatar, with many Qataris gambling for money virtually using VPNs. Violators face up to three months imprisonment and a fine of $825.
