British Prime Minister's bodyguard accused of illegal betting
A member of British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's security team has been arrested as part of an investigation into alleged betting on the date of a general election in the United Kingdom.
According to London police, the officer, whose identity has not yet been revealed in the interests of the investigation, was taken into custody after relevant authorities received information from the Gambling Commission about the “possibility of offences related to the date of the election.”
The constable, part of the Prime Minister's security detail, was suspected of misconduct and has been relieved of duties.
The case has been passed to the Office of Professional Standards for investigation, and the officer has been suspended from operational duties.
The Gambling Commission confirmed ongoing inquiries into the matter. Sunak's surprise announcement of the election date on May 22 caught many off guard, as it was previously unknown.
While betting on elections is legal in the UK, using inside information for wagers is fraudulent and punishable by law.
