CEO of Chinese Platform DouYu Arrested for Opening Casino
The Chairman and CEO of the Chinese video game streaming platform DouYu, Chen Shaojie, has been arrested on suspicion of opening a casino. Earlier, Chinese media reported that the head of the service had disappeared.
Chen Shaojie's disappearance occurred five months after the Cyberspace Administration of China began an investigation into DouYu, particularly for streaming online gambling games, which is illegal in the country.
In December 2022, Chinese authorities sentenced three people to up to six years in prison after they were found guilty of "opening a casino." They conducted an online lottery, inviting users to place bets. This attracted 4.4 million people, and the lottery raised 120 million yuan (about $16.9 million USD).
The case of DouYu is one of the first criminal cases related to gambling involving a streaming platform. Currently, the organization continues to operate as usual.
