EGBA Welcomes EU's Approval of Digital Identifiers

The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) expresses its approval of the European Parliament's endorsement of the proposal introducing a standardized electronic identification method known as e-ID. This mandates European Union (EU) member states to issue electronic identity cards to citizens, streamlining the process for quick registration in online services. While providing an ID is not compulsory for individuals or businesses, the move aims to enhance online identification efficiency.

The new regulations garnered the support of 335 European Parliament members, faced opposition from 190, and saw 31 abstentions. Electronic IDs are expected to simplify online identification, eliminating the need for users to resort to commercial services for identity verification. iGB, an online gambling publication, highlights the anticipated reduction in the risk of fraud and personal information theft with the implementation of e-IDs.

EGBA Secretary General Maarten Haijer emphasizes that introducing IDs in the gambling sector will result in a "smoother and more trustworthy online experience for gamers."
