Facebook fined in Italy for advertising gambling

The parent company of the social network Facebook, Meta Platforms, has been fined in Italy for breaching the prohibition on gambling advertising. The company will pay €5.85 million ($6.45 million) for its refusal to remove accounts that share links to online casinos and bookmakers offering cash prizes. The decision to impose the fine on Meta was announced by the communications watchdog AGCOM.

In December, AGCOM revealed violations by YouTube and Twitch for disregarding advertising bans. Both companies were fined €2.25 million and €900 thousand, respectively. The watchdog stated that both streaming services engaged in commercial partnerships with video producers who posted prohibited content on their online platforms.
