French Government Set to Legalize Casinos

The lottery Française des jeux (FDJ) could become the only company in France with a license to operate online casino games in the country. The company has reached an agreement with the authorities, and according to sources in iGaming, the government is prepared to develop a regulatory act that could grant FDJ such status.

At the same time, two companies — AFJEL, specializing in online gambling in France, and Casinos de France, a network of land-based casinos — are striving to create a competitive market. Representatives of these organizations are actively participating in parliamentary debates, protesting against the monopoly. However, as sources clarified, the French government is not ready to create a competitive gaming market.

The agreement is planned to be concluded in early 2024, when the European Commission will review France’s digital technology bill. Currently, only sports betting and racing through approved operators are legalized in the French online gambling sector.
