Gambling Reforms Take Effect in Italy

Italy's recently enacted legislation for the reorganization of gambling and betting in the country has now come into force. The Ministry of Economy and Finance has unveiled regulations for the reorganization of the online sports betting sector.

The primary objective of the document is to safeguard individuals, particularly minors, who are at risk of harm from gambling. The law introduces new licensing requirements for operators, with a portion of the license fees earmarked for public campaigns to raise awareness about responsible gambling. Online casino and bookmaker owners will be subject to a 3% revenue tax to provide gambling services.

Previously criticized by industry trade unions, including European counterparts, the Italian government faced backlash for the perceived high cost of the license, set at €7 million.
