Gaming Crime Rise in Macau Amidst Industry Expansion

In November 2023, Macau’s gaming industry saw significant expansion, largely attributed to a year-on-year gross revenue increase. This growth was fueled by government measures to support the industry post the coronavirus epidemic. Local gambling operators reported nearly $2 billion in revenue, marking a 435% increase compared to November 2022.

However, the expansion of gaming venues and an influx of players have led to a rise in criminal activities within the gambling industry. Police recorded 155 fraud cases in a month, a 139% increase from the previous year. Thefts in casinos also escalated, with 129 incidents reported in November, a staggering 486% increase compared to 2022.

A primary fraudulent tactic identified involves dishonest currency exchange, a common practice in the region. This has prompted Macau authorities to consider implementing new laws to combat currency exchange syndicates.
