Georgia Pursues Legalizing Betting Following California's Lead

Advocates for sports betting in the state of Georgia are making a renewed push to legalize betting. The Senate committee voted eight to four in favor of advancing House Bill 172, which seeks to legalize sports betting and impose corresponding taxes.

The committee has forwarded the bill to the full Senate for comprehensive deliberation. To enact the law, an amendment to the state constitution is essential, necessitating a two-thirds majority vote from the members of the Georgia parliament. Subsequently, a referendum among state residents will be conducted to determine public sentiment regarding the legalization of betting.

In January, California Attorney General Rob Bonta granted authorization for the collection of signatures in support of two petitions advocating for the legalization of sports betting. It's worth noting that gambling is presently prohibited in Indian tribal areas.
