German Supreme Court Rules in Favor of Player Against Betano

In a significant legal development, the German Federal Court has issued a ruling in favor of a player seeking compensation for losses incurred with sports betting operator Betano. This decision comes after years of legal proceedings and adds to the ongoing challenges facing Germany's gambling industry.

The court's preliminary legal opinion, presented in a detailed 25-page advisory decision, signals a victory for the player in their dispute with Betano. The case, initiated in 2018, revolves around the player's losses totaling approximately €12 thousand in bets placed with Betano, which is owned by Kaizen Gaming.

Notably, the Higher Regional Court of Dresden had previously ruled in favor of the player in May 2023, contending that Betano lacked a valid license at the time of the wagers, thus obligating the operator to reimburse the player's losses.

Legal experts anticipate that this ruling may set a precedent and prompt an influx of similar lawsuits, further complicating the regulatory landscape for gambling operators in Germany.
