Maine Considers Amending Online Casino Law to Benefit Indigenous Tribes

The state of Maine is contemplating changes to its gambling sector through House Bill LD 1777, currently under consideration in the House. This bill aims to grant Maine tribal nations the opportunity to offer exclusive products through online casinos, mirroring the privileges they have at brick-and-mortar casinos.

The proposed licenses, priced at $200,000 each, would be valid for four years, contingent on regulatory approval, and the generated funds would be directed to the Maine Division of Gaming Enforcement. However, the bill stipulates that tribes cannot transfer their license to any other entity or operator unless the recipient is a subsidiary.

LD 1777 allocates 40% of the proceeds from the gambling industry expansion to a state fund, with an additional 20% earmarked for the Opioid Use Disorder Prevention and Treatment Fund. Furthermore, 1% of the amount will be dedicated to aiding individuals struggling with gaming addiction.
