Minnesota Senate Committee Votes to Double Sports Betting Tax

The Minnesota Senate Tax Committee has approved a measure to double the tax on online sports betting from 10% to 20%. The proposal is part of bill No. 1949 SF, which seeks to legalize online sports betting in the state. While the bill has cleared six Senate committees, it has yet to progress further.

With the Minnesota Legislative Session scheduled to adjourn on May 20, there is no set deadline for the bill's passage. Previous attempts to pass similar legislation in the House have faced obstacles in the Senate. A key point of contention revolves around whether to grant exclusive betting rights to the state's 11 indigenous peoples or to give them control over racetracks.

The current version of the bill contains provisions that the Minnesota Indian Gaming Association opposes, although these issues have not yet been addressed in the tax committee deliberations.
