Netherlands Considers Comprehensive Ban on Gambling Advertising

Derk Boswijk, a member of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) in the Netherlands, has proposed a complete prohibition on gambling advertising in the country. The rationale behind the proposal is to safeguard young individuals and vulnerable segments of the population, including national minorities and the LGBTQ+ community.

This initiative by Boswijk has garnered support from fellow Dutch politicians, including Diederik van Dijk, Nicolien van Vroonhoven, and Mirjam Bikker. The proposal is set to be put to a vote in the House of Representatives on February 13.

The Netherlands had already implemented restrictions on most forms of gambling advertising in July 2023. These restrictions covered the promotion of gambling applications on television, radio, print and online publications, as well as in public spaces. Nevertheless, existing laws permit advertising of gambling establishments or online casinos on the internet or through direct mail.
