North Macedonia Bans Gambling Houses Near Schools

The Parliament of North Macedonia has passed a law prohibiting the construction of gambling establishments within a half-kilometer radius of schools. Under this law, companies will be barred from building casinos or bookmakers' offices if a primary or secondary school is within 500 meters. This move has faced criticism from representatives of the betting sector, who argue that more than 10,000 people could lose their jobs as a result. Establishments affected by the law have been given one year to either close or relocate to areas without nearby schools. The Association of Bookmakers has sent an open letter to President Stevo Pendarovski, expressing concerns about the potential impact on the industry and employment. The association urged the president not to sign the bill, emphasizing the potential adverse effects on the sector and the workforce.
