Proposed Legislation Aims to Overhaul Data Processing Policy for US Gambling and Bookmaking Companies
In the United States, there is a push to overhaul the data processing policies for gambling and bookmaking companies. The proposed legislation, known as the American Privacy Rights Act (APRA), could have a significant impact on licensed gaming operators across the country by introducing uniform requirements for the collection, storage, and sharing of personal data.
Currently, licensed betting and online gambling operators in the US must comply with varying regulatory frameworks established by individual states. These regulations can differ significantly from state to state. The newly released draft legislation calls for the establishment of a comprehensive federal consumer protection system.
The draft APRA, introduced by Senate Commerce Committee Chair Maria Cantwell and House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers, aims to "establish consumer privacy rights and set standards for the security of personal data." Among its provisions, the legislation will require transparency regarding how consumers' personal data is utilized. It will also grant consumers the right to access, correct, delete, and export their data, and to opt out of targeted advertising.
