Spain Battles for Fair Football Betting Practices

The Spanish gambling regulator (DGOJ) has signed a cooperation agreement with the Royal Football Federation to monitor sports betting. The country’s leading football body is now integrated into the global betting market research service SIGMA DGOJ.

The Federation will be able to point out unreliable information and warn about suspicious activities in the field of sports betting. Based on reasonable suspicions, the regulator will have the right to prohibit operations that appear illegal for any reason.

The president of the Royal Football Federation’s governing committee, Pedro Rocha, stated that the joint efforts of the authorities and regulators should be “a true example of equal opportunities, safety, and player protection.” Fighting fraud in sports betting is about protecting our football and caring for its reputation, Rocha emphasized.

In September 2023, Interpol dismantled a large network organizing fixed matches for betting.
