Swedish court orders Betsson to compensate addicted gambler

The Swedish Court of Appeal, specializing in patent and market cases, has ruled in favor of a gambler suffering from addiction, ordering Betsson to reimburse all his losses, including compensation for "moral suffering."

The court decision requires Betsson to pay the plaintiff a total of 5.8 million Swedish kronor (approximately €520 thousand). The plaintiff argued that Betsson exploited his addiction through aggressive marketing tactics, enticing him to continue placing substantial bets with ongoing bonuses.

Gaming law expert Magnus Rydeving said the court's decision sets a precedent for similar cases. He noted that the amount awarded in damages and compensation may be just the tip of the iceberg. The damage to the player is likely much greater.

Due to the number of lawsuits filed against Betsson, the company could face the prospect of paying out hundreds of millions of crowns to people who could use the ruling to defend their interests.
