Virginia Senate Committee Backs Tysons Corner Casino Referendum Bill

A plan that would create a referendum for a new casino in Tysons Corner, a wealthy northern Virginia neighborhood, has received approval from a Senate committee in Virginia. In order to promote a choice based on local consensus, this law proposes holding a public vote in Fairfax County over the possible construction of a casino, convention center, and music hall.

The proposal, secured with the support of Senator David Marsden, is to improve Fairfax County's economy, negatively impacted by remote labor caused by the epidemic. To revive the economy, in Marsden's opinion, the casino is essential.

The bill has to pass the House of Delegates, the Senate Finance Committee, and Governor Glenn Youngkin's signature in order to become law.

The committee's decision also includes consideration for Petersburg to host a casino, replacing Richmond. Virginia's broader strategy initiated in 2020 authorized casinos in certain cities, enhancing state revenue and diversifying gaming locations.
