Curacao's Finance Minister Commits to Gambling Law Amendments

Curacao's Minister of Finance, Javier Silvania, has pledged to amend the gambling law as part of upcoming revisions. Currently, the Gambling Control Board (GCB) has issued eight licenses to operators.

The existing legislation has faced criticism from members of parliament and the island's Bar Association. The government of the Netherlands, which previously held control over Curacao, has also expressed its intent to review the law to ensure compliance with the 2020 agreement. This agreement mandated gambling sector reforms in Curacao.

One particular license granted to White Star BV (Rhino) has drawn scrutiny from parliamentarian Stephen Cruz, questioning how the government issued a license before the law's passage. The lack of direct regulation has made Curacao's gambling industry a subject of controversy in recent years.
