Lisa Nandy will become the head of the UK gambling regulator

Keir Starmer, the new UK Prime Minister, has named Lisa Nandy as the Secretary of State for Culture, Media, and Sport, with responsibility for overseeing the UK gambling industry.

“It is an incredible honour for me to become a member of the cabinet. Hard, but very important and interesting work begins today. From rugby league to the Royal Opera House, our cultural and sporting heritage is found in our cities, towns and communities. This is one of our country’s greatest assets,” Nandy wrote on her social network page.

Nandy, born in 1979, comes from a family with a strong history of social activism and political involvement. Her parents are Indian scientist Deepak Nandy, a champion for racial equality, and Louise Byers, whose father was Lord Byers, a member of the House of Lords and Privy Councilor. She pursued a degree in politics at Newcastle University and has dedicated her career to working with charitable organisations.

Nandy has served as a Member of Parliament since 2010. Before her current role, she was the Shadow Cabinet Secretary for International Development and has also held Shadow Cabinet positions in Housing, Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, as well as Energy and Climate.
